Export or Back Up Email, Contacts, Tasks, and Calendar to an Outlook .pst file

For 1&1 Mail Basic, 1&1 Mail Business, and Microsoft® Exchange 2013 by 1&1 accounts

Learn how to back up your emails, contacts, tasks, and calendar with Microsoft Outlook.

It is possible to backup your 1&1 email account(s) through Microsoft Outlook by exporting the data to an Outlook Data File (.pst).


Step 1
First, launch Microsoft Outlook.

From the Outlook window, select File > Open & Export > Import/Export File menu

The File menu shown above is from Microsoft Outlook 2013, which may look slightly different if you are using a different version of Outlook. If you need help with this step for another version, please consult this Microsoft Support article.

Choose the option to Export to a file and click the Next button. Import and Export Wizard window

Choose Outlook Data File (.pst) as the export file type and click the Next button. Export to a File window

Choose a folder or folders to export. If you wish to export the entire account (recommended), select the mailbox itself and check the box for Include subfolders. Then, click the Next button.

Click the Browse button to choose a location where the file should be saved. Export Outlook Data File window

Choose a location to save the backup file. It is recommended to save the file to your Desktop where it is easily located. You may always move this file to another location later. Then, choose a file name for the file and click the OK button. Open Outlook Data Files window

Choose an option for how to handle exportation of duplicate items. It is recommended to replace duplicates in case the export process is overwriting an existing .pst file. This will keep the most current data in the export file. Click the Finish button to continue. Export Outlook Data File window

You may protect the backup file with a password by setting it in this window. However, it is not recommended. When finished, click the OK button.

Please note:
Depending on the size of the account, it may take some time until the export is done. When finished, you will find the .pst file in the location you chose in Step 7.
